Safety and Prevention of Motorcycle Accidents

Florida motorcycle enthusiasts love the feeling of freedom they get when out riding their bikes. With the wind at your back and the road stretching out ahead, it’s easy to lose yourself in the moment. At the same time, it’s important for motorcyclists to always be on the lookout for dangers; car, trucks, and even other bikers can pose hazards when riding, as can dangerous road conditions, congested traffic, and highway construction. Injuries caused by motorcycle accidents are often serious, and potentially life threatening. If you’re a Florida biker, here’s what you need to watch out for when riding, as well as some information on how you can protect yourself from injuries due to motorcycle accidents and collisions.

Motorcycle Accident Causes

Due to the growing popularity of motorcycles and an increase of riders and the population in general in Florida, there has been an alarming increase over the last decade of motorcycle accidents. In response, the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) developed the Ride Smart Florida program, a resource to educate motorcycle riders, law enforcement and emergency responders on the basics of motorcycle safety and accident prevention. According to statistics from the DOT, while car accidents have been on a steady decrease over the last decade, the incidence of motorcycle accidents has increased. Motorcycle accidents are frequently due to one of the following factors:

  • Lack of experience in riding a motorcycle;
  • Lack of knowledge of or failing to use defensive driving skills;
  • Dangerous or aggressive behavior towards bikers by cars and trucks;
  • Driving too fast for conditions;
  • Poor visibility in terms of being visible to other drivers; or
  • Riding while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Preventing Motorcycle Accident Injuries

When accidents do occur, bikers don’t have the benefit of being surrounded by metal and steel the way automobile drivers are. As a result, motorcyclists receive the brunt of the impact in their own bodies, and even a minor accident can cause serious damage. Head trauma, severe cuts and lacerations, spinal cord injuries, broken bones – all of these are common among motorcycle accident victims, and can result in injuries of catastrophic proportions. Motorcycle riders and their passengers can prevent serious injuries when involved in an accident by suiting up and wearing proper motorcycle protective gear. According to Ride Smart Florida, riders and their passengers should use the following safety gear:

  • Helmets, though not required by law in Florida for riders over the age of 21, are by far the most important piece of safety equipment a motorcycle rider can use.
  • Eye protection. Florida law does require bikers to wear eye protection, even if their motorcycles are equipped with a windshield.
  • Protective clothing such as durable jackets and long jeans or pants can help to prevent road rash, scrapes, and burns.
  • Motorcycle gloves help rider maintain control of their bikes by ensuring a firm grip on the steering wheel.
  • Protective boots or footwear that protects your feet and ankles in case your feet come in contact with the road.
