For many of us, summertime means swimming and boating, baseball games, picnics, fireworks and taking off on long awaited summer vacations. Safety In and On the Water
Summer is often the time to relax and let your hair down while enjoying some favorite activities. For many of us, that means water sports and recreation, including swimming, boating, jet skis, and parasailing. Unfortunately, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) accidental drowning is the fifth leading cause of injury death in the United States, and non-fatal drownings and other water-related injuries can result in serious injuries. Play it safe this summer by following these water safety tips:
- Learn to swim. Formal swimming lessons can help prevent drownings when boating or picnicking near water, especially for children.
- Don’t swim alone. Make sure you have a friend with you, and try to swim where lifeguards are stationed.
- Wear a lifejacket when boating, as well as when swimming in lakes and rivers.
- Don’t rely on inflatables. Water wings, inflatable rafts, and ‘noodles’ are no substitute for a life jacket.
- Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In the time it takes for emergency help to arrive, you could save a life.
- Avoid alcohol and be careful of medications that may result in drowsiness or affect your judgement.
If you own a pool, have safety fencing to prevent trespassers and children from accidently falling in. For beachgoers, remember to heed warnings of riptides and strong currents.
Tips to Avoid Common Summer Injuries
In addition to water safety, there are a number of other ways to ensure you and your loved ones stay safe over the summer. The National Safety Council recommends the following summer safety tips for adults:
- Summer means fireworks, but unfortunately, fireworks can often result in injuries. Whether putting on your own display or watching someone else’s, always use caution, make sure not to get too close, and have a steady source of water ready in case of fire emergencies. If things get out of control, don’t hesitate to call the fire department.
- Be careful on crowded roads. Increases in motorists on the roadway – as well as tourists in unfamiliar surroundings – can result in an increased risk of car, motorcycle, bicycle and pedestrian accidents. Don’t be an aggressive driver, take your time in getting where you need to go, and if you’re walking or biking, use designated crosswalks.
- Leave animals alone. Being in natural parks and other outdoor settings means you could run into wild animals, such as snakes or raccoons. Use caution and never approach a wild animal, or try to bait it with food. The same goes with unfamiliar dogs.
