Along Treasure Coast, I-95 In St. Lucie County Named as One of Deadliest Roads
Driving along highways and interstates carries inherent risks. The high rate of speed, the sheer number of drivers, and the potential for breakdowns and mishaps increase the odds of car accidents resulting in potentially serious personal injuries. Unfortunately, sections of road running throughout St. Lucie County are among those named as the most deadly.
Reports Profiles 2018 Fatal Car Accidents Statistics
July marks the time of the year when traffic officials release data collected over the previous six months. According to a July 4, 2018 report in the TCPalm, recently released statistics show that while fatal car accidents along the Treasure Coast are in a slight decline over the previous years figures, they remain at historically record high levels when compared to traffic reports from less than a decade ago. Unfortunately, drivers in our area are among those most at risk.
Major roads such as I-95 and the Florida turnpike generally hold the greatest risks for potentially fatal car accidents and injuries. I-95 alone has been the site of one out of every five traffic deaths reported along the Treasure Coast this year. Both Okeechobee Road and Port St. Lucie Boulevard are also named as being among the most deadly, with both having been the site of fatal crashes within the past six months:
- In January 2018, one woman was killed on Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard after being t-boned by another driver;
- In February, two teenage girls and a 99-year-old man were killed in a head on collision on Okeechobee Road;
- In May, another driver was killed on Port St. Lucie Boulevard after crashing his car into a lightpost;
In June, two additional drivers and at least one passenger were killed on other roads in and around the Fort Pierce area.
Common Factors In Fatal Car Accidents
The Florida Integrated Report Exchange System (FIRES) lists 13 fatal crashes resulting in 16 deaths in St. Lucie County between January and June 2018, which is close to the total amount reported over the entire 12 months of 2010. While current figures seem to reflect a slight downward trend, dangerous driving behaviors continue to put motorists at risk. Common factors that are often involved in fatal car accidents include:
- Speeding, which increases the risk of car accidents and of potentially fatal injuries;
- Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications;
- Distracted driving, such as using cellphones and texting;
- Failure to obey traffic signs and signals.
