Along Treasure Coast, Traffic Fatalities Spiked Over 2018
The beginning of a new year gives state and local officials the opportunity to compile reports and compare statistics regarding incidents which have put the public at risk over the prior 12 month period. For traffic safety experts, this means looking at the total number of car accidents and injuries and how they happened. This can help them determine how effective efforts at raising public awareness are working and whether law enforcement officials have been successful in apprehending offenders before crashes and collisions occur. Unfortunately, in 2018 the number of accidents along the Treasure Coast area increased, particularly when it comes to car accident fatalities.
Major Highways and Interstates Blamed For Traffic Fatality Rates
According to a January 17, 2019 report by the TCPalm, traffic fatalities along the Treasure Coast spiked over the course of 2018. Nearly 100 people were reportedly killed as the result of motor vehicle accidents during the year, a 41 percent increase over the prior five year period.
Along this heavily traveled area which comprises Palm Beach, St. Lucie, and Indian River Counties, it will come to no surprise among residents that nearly half of all the fatalities occurred either on Highway 1 or on Interstate 95. Both roads feature multiple lanes of traffic with motorists traveling at high rates of speed. The margin for error is slim and there is a serious potential for life threatening injuries when crashes do occur. Other factors being blamed for the increase in fatal accidents include:
- Distracted driving: Glancing away from the road for even a few seconds to read a text or adjust GPS settings can cause you to swerve from your lane, which can prove disastrous on major highways;
- Aggressive driving: Improper passing, tailgating, and failure to yield can put everyone around you at risk;
- Driving under the influence: Being under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or even prescription medication can slow reflexes and impair judgment, making potentially deadly crashes more likely to occur.
Some Progress In Reducing Fatal Car Accidents In Fort Pierce
According to Florida’s Integrated Exchange Report System (FIRES), roughly one third of all fatal crashes along the Treasure Coast during 2018 occurred in the Fort Pierce area. More than 5,000 car accidents were reported throughout St. Lucie over that time period, resulting in 33 traffic fatalities. While this contributes to the higher statistics in the broader area, it represents a five year low for local residents.
Traffic fatalities in St. Lucie were nearly twenty percent higher in 2014. Traffic enforcement efforts and increased emphasis on seat belts are likely responsible for the reduction. However, 33 deaths is still way too many and the total number of collisions and injuries continues to increase each year.
